The movie commences with family and friends of an ailing village head, Malaichami (Sivaji Ganesan), gathered round him on his loss of life mattress. The plot then strikes alongside in a sequence of flashbacks, that includes important episodes of the dying man’s life. These embody the presence of a boatman’s younger daughter Kuyil (Radha) in his village. The protagonist is unhappily married to a quarrelsome spouse named Ponnatha (Vadivukkarasi), and seeks consolation and solace in a friendship with Kuyil. The friendship raises eyebrows, and is socially awkward and complex for each Malaichami and Kuyil.
